Chapter 45 - Open Your Coat And Let Me Crawl Inside

Days go by and Beth isn't feeling any better, in fact, she thinks that she's getting worse.  They have 'one more sleep' before Santa comes and Romeo and Jacob are very excited.
Jon had a tree brought into the room and they all decorated it, while Beth laid on the couch and watched.  She tried to show enthusiasm whenever Romeo would show her a pretty ornament, but she really didn't have the energy.  She'd give her weak smile and he would move onto the next one.  Secretly, Beth was staring to worry about what is wrong with her.  She's had the flu before, but it's never lingered this long and she would get better as the days go by.  This time, is different.

Christmas Eve is a big thing in the Bongiovi family.  It was tradition to have dinner with just the family and do their gift exchange then.  When Jon was with Dorothea, it was made this way because her family would always complain about never seeing them ON Christmas Day, so the Bongiovi tradition was started.

Jon's parents, Matt and his wife, and Tony and his wife had just arrived. Walking into the living room area of their suite, Carol sees Beth and is immediately alarmed.  She walks up to Beth and feels her forehead, looking at her son with panic, "Jonny, she's burning up.  She needs a doctor."

Beth sits up a little and says, "Carol, I'm fine.  Please sit down."  Beth draws up her feet making room for her future mother in law to sit down.  Every move that she made hurt real bad, but she hid the pain.  She will not ruin Christmas

Carol stands up, "Jon!"

"Ma, she won't go." Jon says as he walks up to his mother, "She said she'll let me call after they get done with the tree."

"She can't wait!"  Carol looks to Senior, hoping he would back her up.  He did just what the rest of them did, diverted their attention to the kids decorating the tree.  "Beth, you can't wait dear."

Carol sees that Beth is worse than she was yesterday and this flu wasn't a flu.  She knows that there has to be something else going on.  Beth tries to reassure her, tries to get her to settle down to not alarm the children and to not disrupt their tree decorating.    "I can wait, we'll call a doctor after the kids are done.  Please sit down."  Beth smiles at her.  Carol can see that she's  not going to win, and if she tries to do anything she'll just piss Jon off.  So she sits and watches the kids with Beth.

Jon was in charge of handing the ornaments to Romeo.  His excitement made him a little careless and he's already dropped and broke a couple.  House cleaning was waiting in the hall, having come in once already to vacuum up broken glass.  Romeo and Jake are now placing plastic ornaments and candy canes on the tree, Jon sees the end in sight.

Earlier in the week, Jon and Beth planned the dinner menu and the staff was to prepare it for Christmas Eve.  They reserved a room in the hotel for all of them to sit together and enjoy a holiday feast.  Then after dinner they all would return to Jon and Beth's room and exchange gifts.

The tree is decorated and it's almost time to eat.  Pete takes Romeo and Jacob and gets them ready for dinner.  Dinner was to included a family portrait.  With the kids away, Jon walked up to Beth and knelt in front of her, as she laid on the couch, "I'm calling the doctor and having him come up here before dinner."  Beth can see that the look on his face is that he means business so she just nods her head yes.  She needs to be seen, she needs to know why she is the only one that's been sick and why she's been sick for so long.

Jon leaves the room and calls the doctor.  In the meantime, the adults were all talking having a cocktail before dinner, when Tony goes over to keep Beth company.  "You know, you really do look like shit.  You should see a doctor."

"He's taking care of it, I'm sure there will be one here in no time."  Beth smirks at him.  "I'm starting to worry myself, I should be better."

"You've been sick the whole week we've been here.  We all are worried." Tony reaches over and grabs her foot, "I wanted to hit the waves with you."

"Rain check?"  Beth asks, feeling terrible that she's been in the Caribbean for a week and hasn't done anything fun or vacation like the whole time they have been there.  She's missed out on the fun in the sun with the kids and dreaded the thought of going back to New Jersey, where it's damp and cold.  She shivered just thinking about it.

"We can do it anytime.  You just need to worry about getting better.  This sucks, having you sick on Christmas."

"I know.  I feel terrible about that, but I really have no idea what's wrong with me.  I can't keep much down, the steady diet of Jell- and sprite is old.  I want turkey and apple pie."  She chuckles, knowing that she isn't going to eat anything with the family.

"Get better and I'll take you out for turkey personally when we get home."  Tony is concerned, he can see that she's not in  great shape.  Her eyes are dark and sunken, he skin is ashy and dry.  Her lips would be cracked if she wasn't a lip gloss freak.....she looked like she was on her death bed.  He can see her weakness, when she tries to lift his head and he can see that she's lost a lot of weight.

In walks sex on legs, with a little whistle as he enters the room.  He stops in front of Beth, claps his hands and says, "The doctor is on his way.  He should be here in 5 minutes."  Jon felt proud, he's finally able to do something for her.

"Honey, it's time to go eat.  Call him back and tell him to come after dinner, please."

"No, Beth."

Tony stands up and winks at Beth.  He can see where this conversation was going.  He left the area of the living room that they were in and went and found everyone else.  They were out on the beach, drinking their cocktail and waiting for dinner.  All were getting pretty hungry.

"Please, I don't want to miss dinner." she pleads, very weak.  Her voice is mousy and it just reinforces Jon's decision to have the doctor come now.

"He's on his way."

Beth starts to get up, throwing back the blanket that she's been wrapped in.  On the edge of the couch, she tries to stand and can't get up on her own.  Jon sees the struggle, and rushes to aid her.  Helping her off the couch, he asks, "Where are we going?  What are we doing?"

Beth looks at him, like he's being silly.  "I have to brush my teeth and run a comb through my hair."

He laughs, "Babe."

"Just help me to the bathroom please."  she snaps back.  They can hear the kids getting ready to go eat.  Stephanie is giving all three boys strict orders on what to where, preparing them for the family picture.  Beth can hear that she's stressed, and she can tell that Pete is too - she just couldn't help them.  She had barely enough pep in her step to make it to the bathroom.

She does what she needs to do and Jon sends the family down to start dinner.  He said that they would be down after the doctor leaves.  Carol asked if she could stay and Jon just shook his head no.  He knows that Beth wouldn't like it and he wasn't comfortable with the idea either.  Not knowing what was wrong, he wanted it to just be the two of them to deal with it, until it was time to tell anyone.

The family left the suite, all hugging and kissing Beth.  She put on her happy face and hugged and kissed them all right back.  She's now bummed that she's missing Christmas dinner with the family.

The doctor arrives and takes a look at Beth.  Quickly getting her vital signs and listening to her heart and lungs, he looks to Jon and says, "She needs to be admitted, immediately."

"What's wrong with her?" Jon asks.

Beth can sit anymore, she needs to lie down, so she lies back on the bed and listens, sort of.

"My biggest concern is that she is severely dehydrated, and that alone is pretty serious.  I want to run some tests before I diagnose her, but she needs to go and she needs to go asap."

Jon starts to panic, "I can't have her in a hospital here, can I get her to New Jersey?" he wants her to have the best medical care that money can buy and he knows that he won't find it in St. Bart's.

"If she has what I think she does, I don't want you to wait.  I'd feel better if we took her in now."

It's Christmas Eve and Beth knows that, "I'll go tomorrow after the kids open their presents."

"Miss Adams, that is against all medical advice.  We need to get you admitted and push IV fluids as soon as we can.  Time is not on your side.  Your heart beat is irregular, I'm not sure if that is your normal - but at this point, your heart is being affected."

She looks at Jon and Jon tells her, "We're going."

"No, tomorrow."

"You're going now.  There will be more Christmas's."

Beth's eyes start to burn and the lump in her throat keeps getting bigger, "I don't want to miss Christmas, Jon."

"Babe...."

"Miss Adams, time is not on your side.  It's my medical opinion that if you wait too much longer, your electrolytes will be way off and they can cause you to have a heart attack, that could cause death."

"Why am I so sick?' she barks at the doctor, feeling trapped and having no where to go.  "What do you think is wrong with me?  Caner?"  she can't fight it anymore.  She starts to cry, and cry so hard Jon sat with her and calmed her down for a minute.

Jon, looking up at the doctor says, "I'll take her in and she goes in under an assumed name.  You are her doctor and we will allow 2 nurses.  NO ONE can know that she's there, is that understood?"

The doctor nods, "I'll go get everything ready for her arrival.  You may bring her in through the ambulance bay."

Beth looks up with tears running down her cheeks, and snot running down almost to her lips and asks the doctor again, "Is it cancer."
